If staying at home has inspired you to get green-fingered in the garden or if you are looking for something to bring some brightness to your home, Harrogate Borough Council’s Horticultural Nursery has some blooming marvellous plants for you.
For over 150 years the nursery has been growing and supplying a variety of high quality seasonal bedding plants. Many of these are planted in our award winning floral beds in Boroughbridge, Harrogate, Knaresborough, Pateley Bridge and Ripon, as well as in our beautiful parks like the Valley Gardens in Harrogate, Bebra Gardens in Knaresborough and Ripon Spa Gardens.
Before they are planted each plant is carefully cared for in the greenhouses and grown from seed. The team of gardening experts there grow over 400,000 annuals and perennials each year in a range of colours and varieties. This includes pretty primroses, polyanthus and pansies in spring, summer and autumn, to pink, white and red poinsettias at Christmas time.
Surplus seasonal bedding plants and festive plants are sold at the nursery shop throughout the year (please note the shop is currently closed due to the national lockdown in force across England but plants can currently be pre-ordered and delivered or collected). When open again next month you will be able to browse the floral rows yourself or pre-order if you prefer. It’s a real treasure trove for high quality plants and gardening accessories such as planters, containers and compost.
A variety of spring bedding plants are now blooming and ready to buy including primroses, pansies, violas and polyanthus. You can choose from individual plants or for those planting up a border or container tray packs are also available. Pretty pots and plant gifts make the perfect present for special occasions like Mother’s Day and birthdays. There’s also do-it-yourself container kits, hanging baskets and fruit trees on sale.
It’s worth returning too as the greenhouses are currently growing geraniums which always prove popular. Other seasonal specialities like begonia and petunias will be coming in the summer, and cyclamens and poinsettias for Christmas. The variety of poinsettias are particularly known for their high quality as they last well into spring because they are grown on-site from cuttings in a protected environment and never exposed to the cold during transport.
The nursery team take real pride in providing such a special service which makes our parks and special places look so beautiful throughout the year. There is work underway to use and sell more environmentally friendly products including recycled and recyclable bedding trays and 100% peat free compost. Soon the site will also be welcoming some very important wildlife with the introduction of some beehives.
You’ll find the nursery nestled near the Pinewoods off Harlow Moor Road on Nursery Lane (use the postcode HG2 0FH).
