Hello Autumn! It’s got to be one of my favourite seasons – there is nothing better than wrapping up warm, hot drinks and filling the house with conkers! My husband grew up here in Harrogate, so he reckons he’s a bit of an expert on where you can find the best conkers in Harrogate. It’s pretty much becoming a staple after nursery activity for us now – off they go for a quick walk around the neighbourhood collecting conkers. And I’m becoming an expert in getting rid of them ????. But even I’m not that mean, I keep the best ones and have been trying out a few conker crafts!
Firstly – when’s the best time to go? Basically anytime from September onward they can start appearing, it’s especially good to go on a windy day.
Now the important stuff – where should you go to find the best conker haul in Harrogate? I’ve asked our resident Conker expert (my husband) and done a little bit of market and internet research and these are some of the top places to go find your conkers.
Now what do we do with them all? Here are some of our favourite ideas
Did you know conkers keep spiders away? Keep them in a little pile in the corner and apparently it’ll keep those spiders at bay.
A good old fashioned game of conkers is great fun. But there are so many other games to play with them. Create a conker run, use them to learn to count. I always keep a big pile in our garden – our little girl spends hours playing games with them – it’s brilliant seeing her use her imagination to come up with new and interesting games. She’ll hide them, play shops with them and pretend their food, make mud cakes with them, the possibilities are endless.
My absolute favourite Pinterest conker crafting has to be the conker wreath. Our door will be decorated by one by the end of the week the way we’re going. Make a chestnut worm, or makes some great little halloween characters – little spiders – with pipe cleaners and goggly eyes or little pumpkins – simply paint them orange.
Enjoy the conker finding and crafting – but whatever you do – don’t eat them.
