This year sees Pickard Event Services running the event for its 6th year at Harewood Hill Climb after successfully running a local event in the Valley Gardens, Harrogate back in 2015. We are working hard to put this venue firmly on the gravity sports map, so we feel this is achievable especially as we have guests and teams travelling from as far America.
The Red Bull Soapbox races have, in recent years, brought the sport to the attention of the public, with the emphasis on crazy designs. We focus more on engineering like a healthy number of events in the UK where the emphasis is more on speed where carts will reach speeds in excess of 50 MPH.
There will be a mixture of carts here today that will showcase both of the approaches to soapbox racing. Talk to the Teams, they will be pleased to explain the ideas and inspiration behind their carts. Some of the carts will have taken years to develop and have been designed and built using cutting edge technologies, others will have been the product of a conversation in the pub, and a few weeks graft in the shed.
You will see many exotic materials have been used in the construction of these machines. Carbon fibre, aluminium, fibre glass composites, fabricated steels. There will also be machines where less exotic materials will feature wood, string, rubber, balloons & flashing lights.
But of course, no build would be complete without Gaffa tape and lots of it!
