Fundamental Learning offers online Maths and English sessions to primary age children. Over the past year these weekly classes have been delivered by our experienced Harrogate based teachers during school hours and they will continue as an after school club option for children aged 7 to 13 when schools are able to reopen in March.
We are pleased to offer FREE TRIAL SESSIONS to all new children until schools can reopen fully.
Typically, parents tell us they wanted to try our format as their child was struggling to get some important concepts, others highlighted lacking confidence to put their hand up in class, while some cited the desire to have further individualised teaching support and feedback.
Parents have reported that the consistency of weekly sessions has resulted in a more enthusiastic approach to their child’s reading, writing, comprehension and maths problem solving skills. Having that regular interaction with a teacher, and other children, in a safe setting is definitely popular with all our primary children.
This past year has been something that none of us could have predicted. Who’d have thought we’d ever miss that early morning school run and pick up? Life has changed for all of us, and as you and your family are finding your way in the ‘new normal’ we hope that we can take some of the pressure off you.
All our teachers provide engaging, targeted and interactive online classes in maths and English for children in Years 3 to 8. Our classes have at most four children in each group and are a safe platform for discussion, debate, development, and of course some fun! We encourage all our children to ‘have a go’ and remind them making some mistakes is equally as important as aiming to have correct answers.
This month we have welcomed Georgina Bunn, a former international teacher to our Primary team. Georgina has recently returned to Harrogate after working in Shanghai, China, for the past five years where she was the Year 5 head at Shanghai High School International Division. . Like all our Fundamental teachers Georgina is a fully qualified and experienced teacher and she brings her own classroom experiences to the sessions; alongside her work with Fundamental Learning, she writes and directs history and science plays for children. Georgina is able to offer sessions most days of the week and is looking forward to sharing her experiences in China and the US with local Harrogate children.
“I understand every child learns in different ways and at varying speeds. My aim as an educator is to find learning in everything children say and do. There should not be a separation between learning and life. In a 45 minute online group class I can incorporate improvisation activities, games and mini challenges which really help to bond the group . I aim to develop a safe, consistent and open-minded space where every student feels respected, valued, and supported.” says Georgina. Following a recent trial session with Georgina one parent shared her son’s response, “I asked him which part he enjoyed the most, but he said all of it!”
The ambition of Fundamental Learning is to be seen as an after school club option, similar to parents choosing to attend swim classes, martial arts or Brownies. We believe there is plenty
of scope, with the teachers we have carefully selected, to guide our learners in the way they want and celebrate individual progress; whether that’s being more confident to take part, doing some more reading at home or coping better with new topics at school.
Parents can choose to do a Maths and English class each week during term time and most children will be in the same year groups as they are at school. The majority of our children know at least one other member of the group but faces soon become familiar. On going sessions are on a monthly basis and average out at less than £15 per class.
