A gala or community fair is a huge community effort, usually raising money for local charitable causes providing a day packed with fun while bringing people together. There are quite a few in and around Harrogate so we’ve compiled a list for you here. If you know of another one that we’ve missed then please tell us about it here.
Over the last years community events have gained in popularity as a family day out allowing hundreds of local causes and charities all over the country to raise money while building community spirit and creating social fun for everybody to enjoy.
Bilton Gala is the premier community event in Harrogate and the surrounding area, it provides first class professional entertainment and a host of stands and attractions to suit all tastes. The event continues to grow and become ever more popular providing an affordable day out for the whole family. Entry for this years event is £2.00 for adults and 50p for the under 16’s, with gates opening from 11.30. The 42nd gala takes place on Monday 6th May 2019 on Richard Taylor School Fields, Bilton Lane HG1 3DT. This year there will be fantastic headlining entertainment throughout the afternoon. Making his first appearance at Bilton is “Dangerous Steve” with his thrilling stunt act. Along side Steve sees the return to Bilton of the “Drakes of Hazzard”, Mark Wylie with his sheepdog and ducks.
Ilkley Carnival is a not-for-profit event which invites people to the streets of Ilkley every May bank holiday for a fun family fiesta!
The volunteer-run May Day extravaganza has raised more than £60,000 for local community groups since 2012 which supports organisations including schools, sports clubs, scouts and guides and local charities including Ilkley and District Good Neighbours, Ilkley Stroke Group and AWARE (Airedale and Wharfedale Autism Resource).
With a spectacular parade which starts on The Grove and attracts more than 1,000 participants from local schools, organisations and theatre groups, the highlight of every Ilkley Carnival is the day of family fun that unfolds on our fabulous showground which brings something for everyone from live daredevil acts to vintage cars, cricket and football matches, a funfair, an abundance of free children’s entertainment and a chance to find the most popular pooch in the fun dog show!
Ilkley Carnival is so much more than a one-day festival – with your support and that of the teams of volunteers who make it happen, it’s an event that makes a difference to many lives all year, every year.

Almsford is organising a community Fun day on Sunday 9th June 1.00 – 6.30 pm. This free community event has a packed line-up of live music from The Nightjars, All Together Now Community Choir, Harrogate Music School and Heydaze. Plus there is lots of free entertainment for the children including Rascals Entertainment, Bob’s Your Uncle Magician, Noah’s Ark Exotic Pets, bouncy castles and inflatable shooting range.
It all takes place on Almsford Playing Fields (behind Oatlands Junior School), off Hookstone Road, Harrogate and all contributions will go towards improvement works for Almsford community playing fields.
Parking is at nearby Hornbeam Park.

The 1940s day will feature stalls selling vintage clothes, hats and uniforms. As well as wartime military vehicles there will be representatives from the Royal Air Force, the Army and vintage cars.
There will be a full programme of entertainment on the bandstand as well children’s activities, food trucks, tea, cake stall and tombola, a bar, Pimms tent or bring your own picnic, sit back and enjoy the entertainment.
Starbeck Community Day is back again this year on Saturday 29th June and it is going to be a fun packed day!
Organised by Starbeck Christmas Lights Appeal , a small group of volunteers who fundraise throughout the year so that Starbeck have festive Christmas Lights each year! All funds raised will go towards the Starbeck Christmas Lights Appeal.
