I often think the start of the school year is a bit like Christmas – always surprises us by coming around so quickly. No sooner have we stopped worrying about how we are going to keep our little ones occupied without the help of all the amazing pre-school groups we become regulars at and sorted our summer childcare arrangements, then BAM – it’s September already!
And for many of us Mumblers, this will be our little ones first day at school. How has this happened? It seems like only yesterday that they were our babies! Whether we parents are ready or not is irrelevant -we’ll just have to hold it together, it’s all about the kids!
So we’ve asked Claire Magill – Infant Team Leader from Western Primary School for some top tips to help ensure our children are ready for their big day! So here they are – hopefully you’ve got this covered already, but if not – get practicing!
1. They can recognise and put on their own coat and shoes. Don’t buy lace up shoes if they can’t tie laces (Which they probably can’t in reception class!) Buy PE plimsoles that they can put on themselves if possible (The Mumbler household found the velcro strap style much easier for little fingers (and little feet) rather than the ones with a small elasticated panel)
2. They can use a knife and fork to eat their lunch. They don’t have to be perfect with them yet, but they should try their best.
3. They can ask for help if they are unsure of anything. Make sure that they know that their new teacher and teaching assistants will answer any questions. If they are worried, concerned or unsure of anything, then all they have to do is ask.
4. They can talk about things that are important to them – like what they have done with their family over the summer holidays.
5. They can use their manners and say please and thank you.
They do not need to be able to read or write. Each child will learn differently and at a different pace so try not to worry!
And one important tip for parents – make sure that absolutely everything that belongs to your child is labelled clearly!
Good luck to all the new starters this September, and a big old hug to all the parents – it’s an emotional but exciting time for everyone.
When you drop off your little one for the first time, don’t forget to take that all-important first photo in the playground but then take a deep breath and guide them into their classroom and leave. Those teachers know what they are doing and they will look after your baby for you. It can be as tough for the parent (and trust me I know!) as it is for the child on that first day, but if possible, save your tears until after your baby has gone in! You won’t be the only one with the tissues at the school gate, I promise!
