Gateways is a small, non-selective, highly successful independent school for boys and girls aged 2-18 years situated in Harewood village, north of Leeds.
We believe in the numerous benefits that come with our size; investment into keeping class sizes small, our subject offering wide and our facilities up to date is of paramount importance.
In our Prep School, the maximum class size is 18. By being part of a whole school campus, our pupils have regular use of our fantastic school facilities, including a theatre, sports hall, dance and drama studio. In addition to this we have recently added a Prep art studio and a covered outdoor learning space.
We are proud to be regularly placed in the top ten schools nationally for Value Added and are currently no 1 in the UK for Valued Added in Science, Maths, Computer Science, Latin and PE. The reason for this is simple – small class sizes and a focus on the individual. This is further demonstrated in our examination results; in 2020, 70% of all GSCE grades were at grade 7 and above and 79% of all A Levels were awarded at A*/A grade.
At Gateways every child is known and thrives as a result.

Thanks to a unique combination of a small community, truly personalised learning, a relentless focus on how children learn best and a determination to create magical childhood memories, your child will blossom here.
Even in national lockdown, pupils’ studies continue and they are able to interact with their teachers and peers every day to achieve that all important social contact. Queen Mary’s pupils experience a Home Learning Programme providing a rich and enjoyable education delivering engaging and differentiated learning opportunities, pastoral care and individual support with virtual lessons, prayers, tutor time and extra-curricular activities including Music, Speech and Drama and virtual events.
Queen Mary’s is one of the few remaining schools where the gift of a traditional childhood is as equally prized as academic excellence; where river swimming sits comfortably alongside coding. The stimulating and varied curriculum is delivered by a dedicated team of staff who bring out the best in each child. Recent results saw 49% of entries awarded 8-9s (the equivalent of an A* or A**) and many girls move on to prestigious sixth forms and universities including Oxbridge.
In offering a vibrant range of opportunities each child can make their own story. Whether it is performing on stage or taking part in the UK Mathematics Trust events, playing on the new floodlit astro-pitch or riding at the award-winning Queen Mary’s stables, we will help your child find out where their passion lies.
Queen Mary’s offers flexible boarding and provides a minibus service across the region.
We would be delighted to welcome you to an Open Morning or we can offer an individual visit on a date to suit you.
