As you may have read in a previous blog, Harrogate now has a brand-new Kumon Maths and English Education Centre opening its doors once lockdown is over.
Kumon’s reputation for helping children excel in maths is world renowned. For over 60 years millions of Kumon students have advanced beyond their school grade in maths. But what about the Kumon English programme? How exactly does that work and how can it help you child?
The Kumon English Programme
The Kumon English programme aims to foster a love of reading and learning in every child. Students range from age two to older children, building skills from reading and word recognition to advanced level comprehension with the ability to critique complex passages of text. Vocabulary, grammatical precision, memorisation skills and the ability to compose answers are gradually accumulated through different genres of text, familiarising students with both fiction and non-fiction, expanding their knowledge of the world and introducing them to new areas of interest.
The Harrogate Instructor, David, supports students to be able to read thoroughly, extract key information from the content and express an opinion on what they have read in a compelling way. The Kumon English Programme is not tied to any curriculum but complements learning across all subjects at school, giving students the freedom to become advanced, independent and enthusiastic learners, as well as thoughtful individuals.
Early learners – 2-5 years old
Our English programme helps early learners grasp the fundamentals of reading, word recognition and letter formation through fun, colourful worksheets and Instructor support.
Children are encouraged to work in an attentive, thoughtful way to develop concentration, attention span, and good learning practices ready for school and beyond.
Our early learner study methods engage your child with positive learning experiences and build solid foundations to contribute towards a happy and fulfilling future education.
Primary years – 6-11 years old
Our English programme helps children of any ability to establish key foundations in reading and writing, using a variety of texts and topics to spark their interest and enthusiasm. David and his team support your child to build the confidence necessary to think about what they read, how to interpret it and how to express those thoughts in an articulate manner. Our students work at just the right level for their ability, regardless of age, offering them the flexibility to revisit key skills or progress way beyond school level, keeping them engaged and enjoying learning.
Secondary years – 12+ years old
With older children, our English programme helps students develop a positive approach to study through engaging daily worksheets focussing on a variety of texts to ensure good reading and writing foundations. Instructors set work at just the right level, regardless of age, allowing your child to be challenged and keen to learn, with the confidence to critique complex literary passages independently. Students gradually build their ability along with progressing skills in self-learning to set them up well for future learning.
The Kumon recommended reading guide
As your child completes their daily Kumon worksheets, they will read extracts from many well-known children’s books. If your child’s interest is sparked by the extract, David and his team will then encourage your child to read the whole book which is available in the centres reading area. There are 380 books references in the Kumon recommended reading guide. These range from early-learners children’s favourites like The Gruffalo and Dear Zoo, right the way through to high level literary classics like Lord of the flies and Brave new world.
