Mercer Art Gallery new sessions for children aged 18 months – 7 years
I’m very lucky in my job. Recently, while others were running around frantically putting the finishing touches to our new exhibition, I was sitting on the floor of our new family space deciding the lay out of the train track and hanging up the Victorian dressing up costume.
Ok, I was also on my knees vacuuming every groove in the carpet tiles and writing the risk assessment but, overall, not a bad day at the office.
We really want the gallery to be a welcome space for local and visiting families, somewhere to drop in any day and enjoy some relaxing time together.
So this summer we’ve transformed what was an office into a newly painted flexible space which is full of toys, dressing up, books and art activities to give you all a place to relax in and enjoy the gallery and the exhibition.
There’s a train set, a beach and birthday party play areas and dressing up, as well as bean bags to sit and enjoy some lovely books, backpacks to explore the gallery and our art trolley has all kinds of drawing materials to have a play with.
We’re experimenting with some new sessions for families and specifically for children aged 18 months to 7 years.
The sessions start next week. Our littlest visitors will enjoy movement and mindful art activities and families can come to free art days with artist Jennyanne Smith with lots of different art materials and techniques. If you’re interested take a look at www.harrogate.gov.uk/frith
This is just the start of our family welcome plans across our three venues and I’m looking forward to telling you more about them, hearing your thoughts and ideas, and making our venues places filled with families having a great time together.
Session information below:
Monday 8 July, Monday 22 July and Monday 29 July
10.30am until 11.45am
£3 per child
Mini Mercer sessions are a fun morning of children’s movement, meditation and mindful art activities inspired by the art in the gallery, aimed at children aged 18 months to 7 years. The sessions will encourage children to be active, build confidence and manage their emotions. We’ll do yoga moves, simple meditation, breathing and relaxation exercises, and enjoy being creative together with some making activities!
