‘Pink Ribbon Program’ at LEAR Fitness offers exercise rehabilitation for people affected by breast cancer

To support the local community, LEAR Fitness offers a complimentary exercise programme designed specifically for the needs and challenges faced by the growing number of people affected by breast cancer.
The globally recognised Pink Ribbon Program was established in the US in 2004 by Doreen Puglisi, an exercise physiologist who herself had breast cancer. After aiding her recovery. Puglisi went on to use the programme to help women regain a sense of well-being following surgery.
The goal of the Pink Ribbon Program is to create a medical standard of care for post-operative rehabilitation for breast cancer patients and to empower patients with its “get back to living, not just surviving” philosophy.
Elise Mailloux, Clinic Manager, Certified Pilates Instructor and Certified Rehabilitative Breast Cancer Exercise Therapist at LEAR Fitness explains: “We launched the Pink Ribbon Program at the beginning of September, and are working closely with the team at the Sir Robert Ogden Centre at Harrogate Hospital to let people know about the service.
“We already have 15 ladies taking part, and both the physical and psychological benefits of Pilates and exercise have been a joy to see. Many women who have survived breast cancer seem to lose faith and confidence in their bodies, both in how they feel in themselves and also what exercise to do and how much to push.
“The Pink Ribbon Program offers a supportive and educational environment that is Physio led to guide breast cancer patients back into exercise and in taking control of their life surrounded by like-minded individuals.”
Elise previously worked in the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne NHS Trust where she was assessing and treating a significant number of breast cancer clients postoperatively. She concludes: “To be able to help members of our community with their rehabilitation journeys and assist in the improvement of daily life, mentality and functionality is very rewarding. I’m grateful that LEAR Fitness can give back to the community in such a practical and beneficial way.”
The course, which is free of charge, is taught over several weeks, offering twelve 30 minute classes. It is suitable for people at any stage of their recovery, and small class sizes ensure that each attendee receives personal attention and support.
Based on the Pilates principles of alignment, stabilisation and correct posture, the programme helps stretch and strengthen shoulders, chest and back allowing patients to improve their range of motion in the areas most affected by breast cancer surgery, treatment and reconstruction.

Rachel’s Fitness for Mums

Rachel’s Fitness for Mums (previously Pushy Mothers) offers fitness classes and personal training to all pregnant and postnatal Mums.

Rachel is a  Level 3 Personal Trainer, specialising in Stott Pilates and pre and post natal exercise, and most importantly Mum to Evie!

From pregnancy, Mums can come along to Pilates and be taken through a safe and effective class with the support of a working midwife, Lesley Gilchrist of Bespoke Birthing, to give sound advice and tips for labour.

Once baby is born, mums can bring baby along to Buggy mums, where mums will be taken through specific exercises to strengthen the weakened muscles they have developed during pregnancy and child birth, lose the baby weight they gained during pregnancy and tone the muscles they need to help them be a strong healthy busy new Mum! Not only does this group give each mum a great feel good factor (with the coffee and chat after each class too) but baby also benefits from being out in the fresh air.

Once Mum is 9 months post birth, they can join Fitness in the Park to take them to the next level of fitness. Adding impact, running, dynamic exercises and weights.

Each group not only offers Mums expert advice, knowledge and a great workout, but also a social network- nights out are held at least twice a year for the Mums to celebrate their fitness achievements!

Pregnancy Pilates is on a Monday at 10.30am  (from 28th April 2014)and Wednesday at. 7.30pm at The Academy Gallery Studio.

Buggy Mums: Monday 1.15pm, Wednesday & Friday 10am in the Valley Gardens

Beginners running group

We are a new group that is starting up for women who would like to try running (but who think they are too slow, unfit or overweight to give it a go). We will be meeting at Up & Running on Station Parade, at 9.30am on Monday, 7th April and will continue meeting for the next 10 weeks. Sessions will consist of fun exercises, drills and stretches, as well as walk/jogging, and participants will be encouraged to enter a (non-obligatory) 5k race at the end of the course. We will follow each workout with a latte and time for socialising at a local cafe.
