With many parents facing the daunting prospect of home schooling their children until beyond Easter, a brand-new Education Centre, opening soon in Harrogate, is already in high demand.
The Kumon Maths and English Education Centre was once one of Harrogate’s best kept secrets, operating unassumingly from a local church hall. But a move to a new, permanent commercial premises in Westmoreland Street has raised awareness and places are filling up fast.
Kumon Education Centres originated in Japan back in 1958, when a high school maths teacher, Toru Kumon, provided daily worksheets for his son and other local children to complete, to help them learn maths independently. The centres now help over 4 million children from across the world catch up, progress, and excel in their maths and English.
Centre manager and lead Kumon instructor David Riddle, a qualified teacher with nearly 20 years’ experience said, “We haven’t even formally opened the new centre yet because of the pandemic, but already many of our sessions are full and we’ve had to start waiting lists for places on our most popular time slots”.
Children who attend Kumon Education Centres, affectionately known as ‘Kumon kids’, receive individualised worksheets in Maths and/or English to complete every day. They also attend the centre up to twice a week, after school or on Saturday morning, to receive individual instruction and guidance with their work.
“The youngest child who attends Kumon in Harrogate is just 3 years old, the oldest is 16 and we have children of every age in between. Some children come to us because their parents have recognised they may have fallen little bit behind with their maths or English, where as other children attend Kumon because they are already very academic and their parents want them to be able to maximise their ability” said David. “All children are different, but my job is consistent, I help the child to unlock their potential and embrace a love of learning”, he added.
The new centre, which will be formally opened as soon as lockdown restrictions allow it, contains a reception and waiting area for parents, two dedicated classroom spaces and reading area containing over 300 books which the children are encouraged to read when studying the Kumon English programme.
Attending the Kumon Centre up to twice a week and studying the world-renowned programmes in Maths or English starts from just £69 per month.
The centre is also offering a free registration period from now until March 31st, saving parents who enrol their child the standard £39 one off registration fee.
