Børn of the Forest is a classroom without walls where children learn from nature, within nature. Our sessions, based on the principles of the Forest School approach, allow children to learn about nature, the environment, their world and themselves through natural, open ended play, creation, exploration, and discovery.

TERM TIME

Preschool Play. Walkers-age 5 – Term time, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays 10-11.30

Preschool play sessions for you to stay and play with your little explorers. The sessions are child led, natural and open ended with time and space for your little ones to follow their own interests and motivations. There will be lots of time to explore our different areas, thoughtfully designed by our Early Year’s specialist teacher to engage the senses and with child development at the heart. We have mud kitchens, swings, slack lines, den making and much more. There’ll be new enhancements each week often based on stories or the seasons so as well as returning to favourite areas, there’ll be something new to try each visit.

We recommend coming once your little one can confidently walk. Sessions can be booked as one off or using a flexible class pass. Pre-walking siblings are welcome free of charge.

Preschool Forest School age 2.5 – 5 – Term time, Tuesdays 10-12 Sessions are based upon the Forest School ethos. We’ll be following your child’s lead and building upon skills and experiences, which will likely include campfire cooking, with your child involved in the process; learning to use real tools to create crafts and as part of woodland management/ fire building preparation; crafting, playing with and exploring natural materials to help us to learn about and connect with nature. Plus of course plenty of time for child led play!

We recommend coming once your pre-schooler is about 2.5 years old to get the most from the sessions, but younger siblings are of course welcome too with pre-walking siblings welcome to join us free of charge.

After School Club age 5-11 -Term time, Mondays 3.30-5.30

As with the holiday clubs, there is much time spent playing freely. As children attend each week, we’re able to follow children’s interests and motivations and plan experiences accordingly. We are also able to support them in developing Forest School skills such as tool use, campfire cooking and fire lighting.

After School Clubs are to be booked at least half a term at a time and priority to rebook will be given to those already booked in.

Therapeutic Forest for SEND age 4-11- Term time, Thursdays 12.45-2.45 We are passionate about using the Forest School approach to support young people who need some additional support to socialise, improve communication, connect with nature and develop skills. As Therapeutic Forest Leaders we aim to meet the needs of children and young people with additional needs at Forest School. This may include supporting children with attachment difficulties and developmental trauma, those requiring inclusive communication strategies, those with sensory processing needs and children and young people with learning disabilities, autism and behavioural needs.

Home Ed Group age 5-11- Term time, Tuesdays 12.30-2.30 Forest School sessions for home-educated children with parents / carers staying to join them with their play and explorations. Learner centred sessions with much time spent playing and exploring freely. As children attend each week, we’re able to follow children’s interests and motivations and plan experiences accordingly. Green Lane is a small and friendly home childcare setting. We offer 2 hour sessions from 9:45 – 11:45am every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for children of 18 months to school age. We will happily book children in on a regular basis, but can also offer a more flexible service.  Term time only.

Green lane is run by Lucinda and Torie, we are two local Mummies who both have Montessori and Early Years qualifications. Having had 6 children between us, we understand how all consuming young children can be. We wanted to offer a service that would allow parents a bit of breathing space, whilst also developing their social skills, independence and creativity in a home from home environment.

At typical morning for us would be allowing children time to explore the activities on offer; these are changed on a regular basis to follow the interests of the children. We then enjoy a healthy snack together before heading outside to feed the guinea pigs, enjoy messy play, digging or whatever the children would like to explore!

If you feel like this is something that may work for you and your children then please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Play Sessions :

Our much loved stay and play sessions will return to Toy Library HQ at The Old School in Knaresborough every Wednesday and Friday, 10am – 11.30am.

Sessions will be open to all and will run in a very similar way to our pre-covid play sessions – toys and resources will be set up for children to access while grown-ups can enjoy playing along and socialising with others! The only change that we need to make, for now, is that there will be no snack provided for children. You are very welcome to bring along your own snacks though (but please avoid nuts!)

Drinks will be available for grown ups but please bring your own reusable cup. Cups will not be provided so please don’t forget!!

Toilet and baby change facilities will be open – as always, please take nappies away with you to dispose of off site.

Sessions are £3.50 plus 50p per additional child – we can only accept card payments (we have a snazzy new card machine!), we will no longer be accepting cash.

While face coverings are not compulsory, you are very welcome to wear one!

Parent and Baby Sessions

We are delighted to have been awarded some funding from the Coronavirus Community Support Fund (distributed by the National Lottery Community Fund) which has enabled us to provide sessions exclusively for parents with babies. Sessions will take place on Mondays at The Toy Library and will run from 9.30am – 10.30am. We hope to provide an opportunity for parents to socialise and share experiences plus some sensory exploration for the babies with a selection of our toys available to use. Parents will be served with a drink & biscuits and our staff will be around for chat and information.

There are a few safety precautions to have a read of before attending…

  • Sanitiser will be available and we will require everyone to use it when entering the session.

  • Drinks will be served by our team, there will be no access to the kitchen facilities. You will need to bring your own mug or reusable cup for your drink though as we won’t have access to any.

  • Unfortunately, this session is only open to pre-crawling babies and we can’t accommodate older siblings at this time.

  • Finally and most importantly, please do not attend if you or anyone in your household has displayed symptoms of Covid-19 in the past 14 days. We ask that you follow relevant Government advice on quarantining before attending.

Please book here.

Learn to Swim

Jump into swimming lessons with our Learn to Swim programme. Children can learn to swim at the Jack Laugher Leisure and Wellness centre in Ripon, Nidderdale pool, Starbeck Baths and Knaresborough pool. Lessons are taught by our friendly and fully-qualified instructors and we follow the Swim England learn-to-swim framework. They run seven days a week, all year round (including school holidays, but not over Christmas and New Year).

We help your child improve their skills in the water and use different colour bands (red to gold) to represent increasing ability levels. These combine stroke technique, water safety and stamina.

We also run one of the most successful disability swimming programmes in the UK. Swimming lessons for children with special educational needs, disabilities or who find mainstream provision too challenging run at the Hydro every Sunday. They can progress through our star scheme into our hot shot swim squad, and in partnership with Harrogate District Swimming Club are able to take part in a range of competitive opportunities.

Fun, high energy and educational! Classes for 3 months – 4 year olds written by early years specialists and presented by a fully qualified, experienced primary teacher to introduce the world of letters and sounds to your little ones through play.

Each session is full of games, music, dance and much more to teach your children in exciting and interactive ways.

As well as an early introduction to the world of literacy we also help your little one develop their fine and gross motor skills, turn taking skills, speech, confidence and social skills.

Find the right class for your little one:

Babies Class (3 months – walking) An early introduction to the world of literacy through nursery rhymes using a multisensory approach. If you have had a baby in lockdown this class will be a lovely way to meet other mums in a safe, indoor environment.

Minis’ Class (age 1- 2 years) A great class to help develop your toddlers speech and language skills through songs, rhymes, role play whilst also introducing them to letters and sounds.

Preschool Class (age 3 – 4 years). My preschool classes are fun and energetic so your little ones won’t even realise they are learning.

We work on oral blending and segmenting to help with early sound recognition. We learn letter sounds and develop our fine and gross motor skills through dance and play.

These classes will give both you as parents and your children confidence in early Phonics before starting school.
