Theres been a great buzz around Stump Cross Cavern recently! They have so much going on we thought we’d give you a quick round up of everything you need to know about the awesome Stump Cross Caverns. Its a great day out for all the family, even well behaved dogs are welcome (although they’re not allowed in the caves!).
Stump Cross Caverns is an ancient natural cave formation deep underneath the Yorkshire Dales. As well as the caves, they’ve also got a cinema, cafe, shop and visitor centre on site. They are located on the B6265 between Pateley Bridge and Grassington and open seven days a week (9am-6pm). Cave entry is £9 for adults and £6 for children (4-13yrs), which includes a fab cave quiz! Their much talked about cinema is £6 per person. They run special offers throughout the year – so check out their website for latest offers!
The Caves
Discovered in 1860 by lead miners, Stump Cross Caverns has a rich history going back hundreds of millions of years. New passageways have been opened up over the years, with remains of prehistoric creatures such as wolverine and reindeer found in the caves.
Pick up our educational fossil quiz from the ticket booth, and make the most of our information signs, featuring fun characters including Sally Shark Tooth and Timmy Trilobite. There is also the fairy door trail. Explore the caves and find all the magical fairy doors to answer the cave quiz. Prizes for all!
The caves are a constant temperature of 7 degrees so dress warmly. Steps and walkways will be damp. Waterproof boots or wellies make ideal footwear for your visit.
The Cafe
The new Time Cafe features an all new menu, a newly refurbished restaurant, with stunning views of The Yorkshire Dales National Park. They’re something for everything on the menu and they use local meat and produce to ensure quality and freshness. Locally made sausages and the pies are homemade and always a favourite. Their chefs make their own tartare sauce, chutneys, soups, and sauces.
Food is served daily 9am-6pm and they even do a take away service.
Their Bistro Evenings sound lush – with a special Valentines themed one for this month!
The Cinema
Yep – you heard right, they have a cinema! It seats 40 comfortably – you can hire it for parties and events or just go to one of their special screenings! Current showings are Wednesday 6pm, Friday 4pm, Saturdays 10am and 4pm and Sunday 4pm. To find out what’s showing give them a call or DM, they cannot announce films online at present.
The Gift Shop
They are revamping the shop this year, adding a new range of beautiful hand crafted local products and art, which makes wonderful gifts and mementos of your trip. Plenty of fun pocket-money items for the kids too!
Visitor Centre
There are plenty of things to do at the Visitor centre including a sandpit, board games and outside seating with exquisite views for when the weather gets warmer!
