Think back to a special memory of a lesson at school and I bet it was a hands on and active lesson. Well, that is what specialist weeks do: they allow children to become immersed in experiences. At Coppice Valley, we highly value these weeks and experiences and try to explore learning in real-life and creative ways. At Coppice we celebrate a range of specialist weeks: Coppice 50, Science Week, Shakespeare Week and lots more. The children love them! It allows the children to see we value personal development and personal interest development just as much as academic outcomes.
British Science Week
Last week we celebrated British Science Week. For this we wanted to break stereotypes and expose the children to how science knowledge and skills links to the real world. We started off the week with children drawing a scientist, as you can imagine the majority drew an old man, with white hair and a lab coat, we then invited in a range of Scientists in our community to come in and break these stereotypes. Over the course of the week the children got to talk to a Marine Biologist, a Physiotherapist, a Computer Engineer and a Hairdresser; along with extracting DNA, engineering and building structures and exploring the Human Body. The children were able to ask experts questions and become experts in specific science fields, most of which they had never heard or thought about. The children particularly found it interesting to learn about how key science knowledge is used in baking, building and hairdressing.
World Book Day
For World Book Day, we did the usual dressing up as your favourite book character but we also decided to explore inference. Each class was given a specific picture book and the children went through an inferring journey, where they would then work out what was happening in the story. Each class then had to use their creativity to design and make a poster to represent the story. This allowed the children to see the link between reading, writing and creativity.
Coppice 50 Week
Our Curriculum is laced with experience weeks and days and one which makes Coppice so special is Coppice 50 week. Our Coppice 50 is a range of 50 experiences our children will have over their time at Coppice. These complement the curriculum but also show what we value as important for the children’s growth. Follow our social media to see some of these amazing experiences in action over the next few weeks.
