Ben has learning disabilities, and is on the autism spectrum – sometimes he does get very anxious and upset and needs help to feel calm and relaxed. He has a positive behaviour plan in place to help those caring for him to properly understand his needs and
how best to support him.
Ben says:
‘I’m 15 and I live with my mum. I like to spend time outdoors, playing on my go-kart or skate board and going to the park but I also enjoy ‘chilling’ indoors, watching films or playing with my ipad.
I love the company of adults and I like to chat a lot and like lots of attention… I need routine and reassurance about any plans for the day and what’s happening and I would need my foster carers to be patient and understanding about this.
I love my mum but it is just the two of us and there are times when we sometimes just need a bit of time apart – one weekend a month would be great, where I could spend time away from home and give my mum a rest.
I am starting to be more independent and to do things for myself- I like cleaning and trying to make my own snacks but I need other people to help me and to make sure I am safe. I need support and supervision with all my routines like making sure I get up in time – and getting dressed and washed- this is something that I don’t always like doing so I’ll need lots of prompts and reminders!’
